Spirit Guides are souls, also call conscious beings of energy or light -many previously human- that are generally higher energy that have evolved to higher level. They act as a guide or assistant to a living incarnated human being living his or her earthly life. There is a plethora of different varieties and types of guides. Guides are named based on their jobs, what they are there to help you with and what they are like. Below is a list of the typical types of guides we encounter during our life.

  1. Main Spirit Guide (This is a spirit that has guided you your whole life, since birth. Main - spirit guides usually step forward in readings.)

  2. Common Spirit Guides (These guides come to hold the space for you to develop and learn life lessons, help with problem solving and provide insights as needed.)

  3. Protector/Guardian Guides (This is a guide that guards and protects you from harm and may push you to learn some level of self-defense and learn boundaries. They can come through to scare certain people away just by being a dominating energy.)

  4. Healing Guides (A guide or guides that help you in your healing and/or assisting in healing others.)

  5. Teacher Guides (This type of guide will appear to teach you, and guide you along your path. Teacher guides will appear in many different forms depending on your lessons and objectives. They often use archetypal images and may depict themselves as such like the high priestess, old wise man with a beard, warrior, mother or father, etc. They provide guidance through dreams, meditation, and by leaving clues and signs for you.)

  6. Messenger Guide (This type of guide will come to give you messages such as don’t go there, stop, wait, or it is safe, that’s the right person, etc. They can also bring messages about the people you know. Have you ever thought, I should call so-n-so? That would come from a messenger guide.)

  7. Animal Guide/Power Animal(This guide type, also known as totems, are similar to guardian guides/angels, but in animal form. Your power animal is not an individual animal, rather it is the collective spirit of that animal. For example, you don’t have a wolf of bear, you have Wolf or Bear collective energy. Still, it is common for power animals to have individual names. Your power animals/totems will come and go throughout your life, depending on your needs. Totems are animals whose personalities you are akin and similar to. Some guides will present themselves as an animal to give a message or show an aspect of their personality but are not really of the animal energy. A “Totem Animal” is the spirit of that collective animal that you call upon or invoke, as an individual or a tribe, for its special powers and survival skills, to serve as a guardian or protector when facing adversity.

  8. Soul Guide (This is a main guide that is with you throughout ALL of your lifetimes, in between lives and incarnations.)

  9. Ancestors (A passed over relative that assists you in your life.)

  10. Gods and Goddess/deities (these are higher vibrating beings that can influence and step in on your behalf. They chose you many of the times rather than you choosing them. Mut, Sekmet and Bastet are Goddesses who have chosen to work with me.)

  11. Ascended Masters (These are beings that have already lived on this earth and have become enlightened or awakened.)

  12. Elemental/Plant Guides/Nature Guides/Devas (Guides that are fairies, gnomes, sprites, plants and elements such as wood, fire, water, air, earth and metal. Depending on your astrological chart you will have certain elemental guides. Fire and Earth are predominately in my chart so I have fire and earth elemental guides that help to balance me. Fairies bring a lot of love, harmony, joy, playfulness and they take care of the earth. Elemental guides bring balance and order. Sprites are mischievous and will move things around. For gnomes there isn’t much I’ve experienced with them but I have heard that they are about the mysteries of life and are workers and builders. They also are the same as or closely related to Leprechauns. Devas as higher vibrating earth energy beings that are like the angels of earth.

  13. Interpreter Guides (These are guides that help you interpret symbols and signs, what other beings are communicating and translate different languages.)

  14. Helper/Orchestrator Guide (This guide helps to organize events, help you find things or someone and bring outcomes. They are also called reminder guides and time guides by some because they remind of us things to do.)

  15. Conduit Guide (Conduit guides are guides who assist professional intuitives to connect to other people’s spirit guides for readings. They may also connect to you to aid in performing an intuitive act.)

  16. Gatekeeper Guide (These types of guides often show up as guard dogs to warn you away from places or warn others away from you or your personal information, like you personal soul records (Akashic records). They connect you with the right memories at the right time to bring the healing, advancement, wisdom and knowledge of your soul’s memories into your current experience without overwhelming you with too much at any given time. Gatekeeper guides also work to block entities, as well as allow past loved ones to reach you, depending on what is for your highest and greatest good. Somewhat like protector guides, expect they work more to keep the lower vibrational (some call this “negative” or “entities”) energies away from an individual when they are opening up doorways to different realms, only allowing appropriate spirits to enter. These guides offer physical and psychic protection to mediums and spirit communicators

  17. Record Keepers/Information Guides (These guides are like librarians, ever recording information and directing you to it when needed. They have access to knowledge and information about things in general. Sometimes during a reading one of them will pop in and give information about how the world works,. They are sometimes used synonymously with gatekeepers. The difference is they normally aren’t personal to you and will record information from anyone and on a global and even cosmic level. Gatekeepers are more specific to you.)

  18. Temporary Guides (A guide that steps forward for a period of time then moves on. A temporary guide can be any of the mentioned guides.)

  19. Karmic Guides (This is a guide or guides you’ve know in another life. They help you to navigate personal and collective karma so that you can resolve it, step off the wheel of karma and experience new levels of love and blessings. They work largely in forgiveness.)

  20. Creative guides (These guides help to remove writer’s block and starving artist syndrome. They also keep you in the flow of creative energy and can inspire you. You may also fine musician guides that play music. One of my main guides plays the harp to help me relax when I’m stress.)

  21. Astral/Transit Guides (These are guides that help and guide when you are astrally traveling.)

  22. Child and Joy Guides (These guides are playful, and beam childlike joy, light, and love. They are with you to help you lighten up and enjoy life. Laughter, fun, playfulness and just not taking things too seriously is their message. Laughing more can help you link in with your guide. They may be perceived as mischievous at times but it is normally light and fun.)

  23. Trickster Guide (Although the name might seem scary to many, these guides are more interested in riddles, rhymes, puzzles, patterns and humor. They aren’t meant to harm or hurt you, they distract, make irrelevant areas of interest that aren’t good for you and they play tricks to lighten the mood. An example of making something irrelevant that you are focusing on that might not be best for you would be them make you sleepy. They may knock something over to distract you. They are closely connected to joy guides. I find that these guides benefit for clear direction because some of what they might think is helpful might not be as helpful as you would like. You are in a sense their guide to what works best for you. Most guides will benefit from your feedback and guidance. Gods, deities and Goddess might not welcome it as much.)

  24. Life Guides (These are like the managers of your spiritual team. This spirit guide is generally with you from birth to death, and works to manage and coordinate all the other spirit guides, angels, and spiritual teachers assisting you at any given time.)

  25. Reflective guides (This is a newer term that I use for guides that don’t communicate. They come into our lives to teach us to find the answers within ourselves. They could also fall under ascended master and deities guides. They don’t speak or communicate; however, their presences are strong and clear. They want you to look inside for the answers. They bring lessons of independence.)

  26. Light Beings or Angels (Some don’t see these as guides because they are higher vibrating beings and have never been in human form on earth. They don’t incarnate into lower realms. Others still believe they have been humans before and have just evolved. Light beings are said to help people move through traumatic areas of life such as death, loss , depression, grief, regret and failure. Light beings are called such because of their tendency to appear bright, glowing or full of light.-
